Understanding Thread Count and Cotton Fibers
Thread count is usually the first number shoppers look for on a sheet set, and it is often treated as a simple score: the higher, the better. In reality, how a sheet feels and how long it lasts depends on three things working together: the thread count, the cotton fibre and the weave. Understanding all three makes it much easier to choose sheets you will love.
What is thread count?
Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric, counting both the lengthwise (warp) and crosswise (weft) threads. A higher count generally means finer yarns packed more closely together, which gives a smoother, denser fabric with more weight and drape.
But a very high number is not automatically better. Some manufacturers inflate thread count by twisting several thin, weak strands into one yarn and counting each strand separately. The result can be a heavy sheet that traps heat and wears out faster. A well-made 450 or 600 thread count sheet in good cotton will often outperform a poorly made sheet with a much bigger number on the label.
Why the cotton fibre matters
Cotton fibres are measured by their staple length. Long-staple and extra-long-staple cotton, including Egyptian cotton, produce longer, finer fibres that can be spun into smooth, strong yarns with fewer loose ends. That means:
- a softer, silkier feel against the skin
- less pilling and lint over time
- greater strength, so sheets last through years of washing
Short-staple cotton has more fibre ends poking out of the yarn, which can feel rougher and pill sooner, even at a high thread count. That is why every Lane Linen sateen sheet set is made from 100% long-staple cotton, and our Egyptian Cotton Sheet Set uses 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton.
Sateen vs. percale: the weave changes everything
Sateen uses a four-over, one-under weave that places more yarn on the surface. It feels smooth and silky, has a soft sheen and resists wrinkles, and it tends to feel a little warmer. Thread count is a useful guide for sateen, which is why our sateen sheets come in 450, 600 and 1000 thread count.
Percale uses a simple one-over, one-under weave. It feels crisp, cool and matte, and it breathes exceptionally well, which makes it ideal for hot sleepers. Percale gets softer with every wash.
Organic cotton and why we focus on GSM
Our Organic Cotton Sheet Set is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton in a percale weave. Because organic cotton is grown and processed without harsh chemicals, its yarns are naturally a little less fine than conventionally processed cotton, which limits how high the thread count can go. So instead of chasing a number, we focus on what matters for comfort: GSM, or grams per square metre. At 120 GSM, the fabric strikes a balance between breathable and durable, not too heavy and not too light.
How to choose
- You sleep hot or love a crisp hotel feel: choose organic cotton percale.
- You want everyday softness that is easy to care for: start with 450 thread count sateen.
- You want more weight and smoothness: try 600 thread count sateen.
- You want the most luxurious drape: choose 1000 thread count sateen or Egyptian cotton.
Whatever you choose, look past the headline number and check the fibre and the weave. That is where real comfort comes from. Explore all Lane Linen sheet sets.
